Stop 'Consultation Dating': Why the Missing Link in Your EMDR Journey Isn’t Another Training

We’ve all been there. You finish your EMDR Basic Training, you’re handed the manual, and you head back to your office (or your home office—hopefully one with central air if you’re here in Vermont!) feeling like you have a powerful new tool you aren't quite sure how to use.

If you feel overwhelmed, you aren't alone. Many of us finish basic training and immediately think, "I need more." We sign up for R-TEP, G-TEP, and Parts Work. We buy a library’s worth of EMDR books. But often, we end up with a collection of "whats" without ever truly understanding the why.

The 'Online Dating' Struggle of Finding a Consultant

After my own basic training, I spent a lot of time "consultation dating." I was searching for the right fit, meeting with various experts, and trying to find someone who could help me make sense of the collective trauma we were all experiencing.

While I appreciate every colleague I met along the way, I noticed a pattern: most suggestions were to take another training or read another book. Five months in, I had a library of EMDR books, but I didn't know how it all connected together.

The Breakthrough: AIP Case Conceptualization

What I eventually realized—and what I want to share with you—is that the gap in my practice wasn't a lack of specialized training. It was a lack of AIP (Adaptive Information Processing) case conceptualization.

  • Distinguish between symptoms vs. problems.
  • Identify clinical themes across a client’s history.
  • Recognize clinical choice points with confidence.

Why You Don't Need Another Training (Yet)

You don't need more protocols to memorize; you need a consultant who can help you adapt the standard protocol with fidelity to the human being sitting in front of you. When you understand the why behind the process, you start to see the clinical landscape through an AIP lens.

"Consultation is truly about mentorship. Connecting with the right consultant provides the mentorship that allows you to not only learn and grow in the EMDR model, but to expand your internal capacity to support your clients'"
